Either they had an affair or they didn't. What can people say about this? Any anonymous sources willing to write some facts?
Although it would be more interesting to show that McCain was bribed by the woman to improve her company's position via his committee, that's harder to prove. If evidence of that comes along, we can interpret its as "an affair" in the same vein -- having influence.
